From Stoke Knittington to Stick Newington: sticks replace crochet as the next Stoke Newington fad emerges

by: Georgina on 5th Apr, 2017

When Michael Naik found local shop Botanique a premises on Church Street, no-one envisaged the flurry of attention that would follow.

The Stoke Newington artisan store has come under fire for selling sticks, despite the shop being just metres away from Clissold Park.

The sticks range from £12 - £18 and are offered as wall hangings. Some even have notches for hanging clothes. Alice Howard, owner and shopkeeper of Botanique, said the wall hangings were worth the price tag as they are individually sourced and hand crafted in Devon.

The shop first began to garner attention after BBC broadcaster Jeremy Vine retweeted a photo of the sticks on sale. The photo then went viral, prompting some locals to wonder if Stoke Newington had hit "peak gentrification."
